5 Things You Must Understand About Car Maintenance

by Saira Tanis

When you own a vehicle, you don't need to know all the details about how to take care of it, since you can simply have it serviced by a professional, such as 59 Auto Repair. However, there are some basics that you should know, which is going to help you ensure that you are able to keep your car running smoothly. Here are five things you must understand about car maintenance:

  1. Oil: You don't have to change the oil in your car yourself. However, you should know the basics of how engine oil works so you can understand why it's so important to change it regularly. The engine oil helps to lubricate the moving parts of the engine. Without oil, the engine parts can become worn, and eventually, you will have to replace the engine altogether, which can be expensive. On top of this, the engine oil removes dirt and other debris from the engine that could cause problems with it as well.
  2. Tire Pressure: The tire pressure of your vehicle is important because poorly inflated tires can cause the tires to become worn and can also waste gas. You can easily check your tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge and fill the tires up with air yourself at the gas station or take your vehicle to a tire shop to have them do it for you.
  3. Brakes: You know you need the brakes replaced when the brakes begin to squeal or your car feels shaky when you brake. Without changing the brakes when this happens, you become an unsafe driver on the road because your brake time lessens. If you need to stop quickly, you may not be able to, which can result in an accident.
  4. Timing Belt: The timing belt is what helps keep your car in motion. At a certain point, this timing belt can break, but not if you have it changed when you are supposed to. The best thing to do is check your owner's manual, which will indicate how many miles you can drive before you should have it replaced.
  5. Tire Vibration: If you notice your car vibrating at any point while driving, it's important to take your car into a professional tire shop. At this point, the tires will either need to be replaced or rotated. It's important to rotate your tires regularly to increase the lifespan of the tires themselves. Rotating your tires is when the front tires will replace the back tires so they experience different traction on the road.

By knowing these five things about car maintenance, you can be sure that you increase the longevity of your vehicle's parts, save money, and increase your safety while driving on the road.
