One of the first things you have to think about when looking at a used transmission versus a new one is how much longer you are going to have your vehicle. If you were planning on selling or trading in your vehicle in the next couple of months, putting in a used transmission might be ideal. For those who are planning on keeping their vehicle for quite some time still, it might be wise to go with a new transmission to prevent having to deal with the issue again in the near future.
The amount of miles on your engine.
Another thing to think about is the amount of miles your engine has on it. If your engine has 200,000 miles on it, you might want to be prepared for that to go out on you in the near future as well. Because of that, you might be better off investing in a used transmission with 100,000 miles on it to save money to put a used engine in when it goes out. Many individuals find that when they have a higher mileage vehicle to begin with they are better off going used to save money.
The age of your vehicle.
You also want to look at how old your vehicle is. While it might not happen all that often, newer vehicles can have transmission problems. Sometimes, there is just a bad batch from the factory and consumers end up having to replace their transmission when the vehicle is only a couple of years old. When you have a newer vehicle that might only have 15,000 or 20,000 miles on it, you are better off going new to make sure your transmission is going to last for quite some time, and you receive a warranty to protect you for the future.
